PEARLY POUCH

                                                                                                       With Beaded Tassels

By Mary Jane Wood

These little beaded pouches make a wonderful gift and may be used as a fancy package  to hold a special jewelry gift. They may also be used to hold lipstick/lip moistener, credit cards, bus passes etc. You string your beads first and then very soon you are finished with this fairly quick project.

Crochet Skill level : intermediate (I usually rate thread and bead projects as intermediate although the pattern is fairly simple)

MATERIALS
1 ball of Size 10 crochet cotton
Big Eye beading needle (or you can dab some glue on the end of the thread- then let dry to make a needle)
4 Steel Hook or hook that produces the correct gauge. (I crochet loosely)
800 4 mm Darice pearls or 60 grams of size 6 beads

For strap and tassles:
100 yds size 20 crochet cotton (I used Cebelia white cotton thread in sample project) or size 8 Perle Cotton
Approx. 540 Size 2.50 mm Darice pearls or matching 11/0 seed beads
Size 1.0 mm hook

GAUGE: 8 sts = 1 ". Gauge is not really important for this project.

      FINISHED SIZE: Purse measures about 3" wide x 4 ¼ " long.

SPECIAL STITCHES

sc=single crochet (without a bead) yo=Yarn over hook

sl st=Slip Stitch (without a bead) st= stitch

bsc=Beaded single crochet as follows: insert hook in st, yo and pull up a loop, slide bead up close to st, yo and pull through 2 loops.

bdc= Beaded double crochet as follows:yo, insert hook in indicated st., yo and pull up a loop,yo and pull thread thru 2 loops, slide bead up close to st, yo and pull through 2 loops.

PURSE

String about 400 pearls onto the size 10 thread at one time. When you run out of beads, finish off, string more beads and start crocheting where you left off. With Size 4 hook,

Foundation Rnd:Ch 24, sl st in back loop of 2nd ch from hook and in the back loop of each ch (23 sts).

Rnd 1: Working along opposite side of ch, sc though both loops of each ch. Working along the sl sts on other side, sc in each sl st until last st, 2 sc in last st (47 scs)

Rnd 2: (Sc in next st.,bsc in next st)around until last st, sc in last st(47)

Rnd 3: (Bsc in next st,sc in next st) around until last st, bsc in last st.

Rnds 4-25:Repeat Rnds 2 and 3 consecutively until pouch measures 3" or desired height minus about 2".

Rnd 26: Ch 1, bdc in first st, ch 1, (sk next st, bdc in next st, ch 1) around ending sl st in last st (48 sts)

Rnd 27: Ch 1, (3 bdc in next dc st, skip next ch 1 space and dc, bsc in next ch2 space) around, sl st in 1st st.

Rnd 28: (skip 1st dc, bsc in 2nd dc, skip next dc, 3 bdc in next sc ) around, sl st in 1st st.

Rnd 29: Ch 1, (3 bdc in next sc st, skip next dc,sc in next dc, skip next dc) around, sl st in 1st st. Finish off and secure all ends.

Tassel (Make two): String the smaller beads onto the size 20 thread.

Rnd 1: Using a 1.0 mm hook, ch 5, sl st in 1st st to form a ring;

Rnd 2: make 10 sc in ring;

Rnd 3: (Insert hook in next st, slide 24 pearls close to st, YO hook and bring through stitch, yo and pull through two loops) around (10 ch24 pearl loops)

Rnd 4-6: Bsc in each st (10 sts)

Rnd 7: (Skip 3 sts, bsc in next) 3 times. Do not finish off , continue with strap.

Strap

Row 1: Ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn

Row 2: sc in 1st vertical Loop that is snuggled next to the horizontal loop.

Row 3: Turn clockwise, (DO NOT ch 1) sc under both vertical loops

Repeat round 3 until strap measures 7". Finish off and secure all ends.

Alternate Strap:

If the first strap is too difficult, you can work this alternate strap:

Chain until the strap measures about 7 ½ ", turn ch over and sl st in back loop of each ch. Secure tightly to the tassel.

Finishing

Starting on the left side, thread strap through rnd 26 so tassel lies on the left side and sew other end of strap to tassel. Do the same for the second tassel starting on the right side . Sew other end of strap to tassel.
